What is ABA?

behavior bytes vocabulary Jan 05, 2024

“Applied behavior analysis (ABA) means the design, implementation, and evaluation of environmental modifications, using behavioral stimuli and consequences, to produce socially significant improvement in human behavior, including the use of direct observation, measurement, and functional analysis of the relationship between environment and behavior." - NYSED Office of the Professions

ABA or Applied Behavior Analysis is applying the principles of behavior to increase or decrease specific behaviors. Something to note is that in ABA, behavior is defined as anything one says or does (i.e. anything that can be observed and therefore measured) not just “problem” behaviors. These behaviors are meaningful to the individuals and their families. A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) designs programs that are rooted in research and data that lead to skill acquisition and more desirable social interactions. Once these programs are implemented by the BCBA or RBT, the data is closely monitored and reviewed by the professionals to ensure an effective treatment.
